How Are Rental Car Agencies Staying Afloat During The Recession

By: Amanda Greene

When you travel you are likely to need not just the best hotel or airfare prices but it's likely that at some point during your vacation you are going to rent a automobile. In most cases you can find some discount travel internet websites which could offer you a good deal on a hotel stay and even on your airfare but if you think that you're going to make a killing on the price that you are going to pay for your car rental then you may perhaps want to think again.
Do not get me wrong there are many discounts and coupons available on the web and if you do book your other travel arrangements through an all inclusive site it's very possible that by tacking on a car rental as well that you can shave off a certain percentage of the cost you'll incur. Of course, this does not mean that you are really saving that much because there are very few deals available within this industry.
This is occurring throughout the rental industry with good reason. As the economy began to take a turn for the worse, those in the rental industry saw the necessity for change and thus they found ways in which to recession proof their organization. The first way they chose to accomplish this was to sell off any excess vehicles that they had and instead of reinvesting that money they chose to sit on it. This provided them with a little bit of extra savings to help see them through the storm.

Next they found ways to charge a little bit extra by only having a few vehicles on hand at a time raising the overall demand for vehicles thus raising the price they could charge for them. They also began to realize that they could make quite a bit more per rental by charging per mile even on local rentals and so now most companies do that as well. Essentially these companies found that by making some good solid business decisions that they were able to ensure that their entire industry stayed afloat and profitable throughout the economic decline.
There are still many deals to be had in the leasing industry and most companies offer consumers several specials and discounts and some even offer up loyalty cards for their customers. Taking advantage of all the specials, discounts, and deals that you can will definitely help to bring down the cost of your car hire but if you think that you're going to get one really cheap, the days of that happening have long since past.
