Hosting a Great Outdoor Party

By: Terry Daniels

Summer time is a great time to have parties outside. When the weather is nice, there is no better time to get together with friends and family to enjoy some fresh air and some wonderful food.

There are also many excuses for getting together for an outdoor party. For example, you may want to celebrate a graduation, wedding, company achievement, and so forth.

Or you may want to host a baby shower, a bridal shower, a family reunion. This may be a great time to invite all of your neighbors over so that you can have a chance to get to know them as well.

The party you host can be held in either the front or backyard depending on which one is larger, better landscaped, or more convenient. If you do not want your own home to become a mess, then you may want to consider hosting the party at a local park, playground, or even a zoo.

Lakes and riverside locations can also be quite nice because then swimming can be included in the list of activities. Of course, parties in parking lots are quite popular during the sports seasons, but you can have them during the summer previous to other activities as well.

If you are lucky, you may have a beautiful public garden nearby at which you can host the party. Or you may even want to consider the beach.

When you plan to host the party at another location it is always a good idea to have your own yard ready in case it does not work out. In addition, you will want to be able to retreat indoors if the weather does turn bad.

Hopefully this will not be the case, but it is something you should prepare for anyway. Try to make sure that there is some kind of shelter or roof nearby that you can hide under if it rains for ten minutes.

If you are going to throw the party in your own backyard, you will also want to consider the fact that it tends to get cooler at night. Be prepared for this by having some extra sweaters on hand and setting up several space heaters.

Space heaters can help the guests who are sensitive to the cold stay comfortable throughout the entire party. Of course, you will want to make sure that the heaters you select are energy efficient.

Otherwise, they could add significantly to your energy bill. Fortunately, there are many that you can choose from that are energy efficient and which will fit your needs and your budget.

Another issue that you will need to consider preparing for is the insects. Insects are simply a part of an outdoor party.

There is no way that you can get rid of them. However, you can take preventative measures to keep them out of your food.

Make sure that you use some kind of mosquito repellant so that your guests do not return home with several bits. In addition, some people recommend spraying a safe insecticide around the party area to help eliminate the number of insects that may become bothersome.

If you choose to follow this method, you will want to make sure that you do it several hours before the party so that the smell does not hand around. Another thing you may want to consider is having your party occur after the sun has set rather than in the brighter evening.

The stars can make it quite romantic. Add to the atmosphere by hanging up little lights around the area.

Or candles can make nice table centerpieces as well. If you think ahead, you can get candles that look great, but effectively keep the insects away from your guests.

It is particularly important to remember to light steps, steep paths, uneven ground, and other areas where the cords may cross. You do not want any of your guests injuring themselves at your party.

Another thing that you will definitely want to consider is the theme of the party. There are many different themes that you can choose from.

A Mexican fiesta, Hawaiian Luau, and barbecue seem to be the most popular. However, there are so many other themes that you can choose from.

You may want to consider a garden party, a pool or beach party, or a fourth of July party. These themes are all quite easy to find decorations and activities for.

In addition, the theme you choose can help create the atmosphere that you hope for. With all of this careful preparation, you will be able to host a very enjoyable party.
