Hints For Shampooing Your Cat

By: Pet Care

As a rule cats are already very skilled at keeping themselves clean. They learn from a very young age and will spend countless hours primping and preening and as a consequence cat owners seldom need to bathe their cat.

Nevertheless, if your cat is suffering from skin allergies or has a flea infestation, you might need to lend a hand by bathing your cat. By and large, cats loathe water and it can be very challenging to coach them into a bath. Being prepared and having everything you need on hand before you begin is the key.

What You will Need.

First up you will need a mild non-irritating shampoo like baby shampoo or preferably a shampoo specially formulated for your pet’s sensitive skin. It is good to have a few old towels ready, not just for drying but also to help protect yourself from scratching and biting should you cat become agitated and start to struggle violently. You will also need a cup or plastic jug to rinse off any excess lather. Keep in mind, it will be next to impossible to dash out for an extra towel or shampoo while dealing with a struggling cat.

The best place to bathe you cat is in a small enclosed scope such as your laundry. This will make your cat feel safer. A laundry sink is ideal for the task. You do not require a lot of water in the tub, sufficient to rinse, and the water should be lukewarm, never hot or cold, and you might also want to trim out any matted fur prior to bathing.

Also, it is a good idea to have a non-slip mat or folded bath towel in the base of the sink or tub to prevent the cat from slipping.

How to Get Your Cat Into The Water.

This is where the problems begin. You will need to ease your cat into the water starting with its hind legs. The best way to accomplish this is by placing one hand under the cats belly and one hand firmly, but gently on the cat’s back. Now gradually lower your cat into the water. If your cat starts to struggle, you might want to wrap a towel around you arm to stop scratching. Some cats will sit there calmly and let you work whilst others will go into a frenzy and do everything they can to escape from you. There is one thing for certain, you will get wet!

Now that your cat is more or less positioned in the water, you can start to bathe him. Work swiftly, but gently. If need be, hold the cat near to you to make him feel more secure. Never raise your voice, move to suddenly or verbally scold your cat as this will only make the cat become scared and uncooperative.
Begin with the head and work your way down the cats body, being careful not to get water or shampoo in your cat’s ears or eyes. Only a very small amount of shampoo is required. If you are treating your cat for fleas, follow the guidelines on the flea shampoo. Too much shampoo will call for added rinsing and more time in the water.

When the bathing is completed, wrap your cat in a dry towel and gently dry him off. Generally speaking your cat will want to get away as soon as possible. This is natural so allow your cat to scamper out of the laundry or bathroom. You will usually find him sitting in a quiet place preening himself.

Do not forget to praise your cat with some kind words and a treat.
