Hiccups...Where Do They Come From And How To Get Them To Stop

By: Amanda Greene

There are many horrible and debilitating illnesses out there but hiccups although not life threatening, at least in most cases, are in actual fact quite annoying. Some people only get them occasionally while others can have them for days at a time or on and off for a period of days or even weeks.
If you ever wondered where these little glitches in the system come from they come from the diaphragm. The diaphragm sits in your chest and it helps to regulate the air that you're breathing in and out. Of course, most of the time it works perfectly and when you inhale it pulls air from your lungs and when you exhale it the diaphragm relaxes and air flows back out of the lungs to the nose and mouth.
Hiccups occur when the diaphragm becomes irritated. When this happens the diaphragm goes from flowing smoothly to jerkily forcing air down into your throat and when the air hits your voice box that is what makes the noise. This type of irritation can occur for a number of reasons including eating too fast, problems with the stomach or the throat, or can even be triggered at a point when an individual feels nervous or excited. A normal case of hiccups usually only lasts for a few minutes but they can last longer and if they do it is usually a sign of something else going on within the body and the person should seek medical attention as soon as possible.
There are many home remedies for curing the hiccups but many individuals don't find that they work too effectively. Some say holding your breath is the key, while others will tell you a spoon full of sugar will help to send those hiccups packing. Even scaring an individual has been used as a way to get the hiccups gone. Perhaps the most effective technique that has been proven moderately effective for getting rid of the hiccups is to take a mouth full of water, hang your head down like you're going to touch your toes, and then swallow as you bring your body up to normal position. Doing this seems to have some effect on the air and tends to reverse hiccups a majority of the time in most individuals.
The hiccups may be annoying but they are something which could happen to anyone at any time. Using some of the home remedies you may perhaps be able to lessen their stay but even if you do nothing chances are that they will disappear within less than an hour and will quite possibly stay gone for a while as well.
