Helping Your ESL Student Write Well

By: Ignacio Lopez

Teaching writing to an English sign language student can be difficult. Although it may be difficult, you have to understand that it is possible and you should be doing all that you can to treat that ESL student with the best possible care that you can.

ESL is a language and you want to show respect for that language. Be wise in the way that you treat your ESL student and do not treat someone that speaks ESL in a way that would make them feel disabled.

First, you want to make sure that you help them to read a lot of material. There are some very integral differences between the spoken English language and the signed English language and they can exacerbate some problems with writing.

When a student speaks ESL he or she may have a hard time differentiating between sentences. When telling a story in ESL he or she will not pick up on the same sentence structure that he or she would if he or she were to be reading the story.

Encouraging the student to read will help with this. The idea of sentences beginning and ending can become much clearer when you teach the individual to read and enjoy stories in books and other written sources.

Second, you want to make sure that you are finding reading material that the student actually enjoys. Make sure that you cultivate a love for reading in the student so that you can use that love to help them learn how to write.

As you are helping them to write you may also want to start by teaching them to write things that will be applicable in their life. Writing thank you cards to someone in their family or even writing about a current event in their life may help them in the writing process.

When you are helping an ESL student write you should be sure that you understand how you are going to help them write at their level. You do not want to be pushing a student to be writing above his or her level.

Make sure that you are taking the time that you need to assess where the student stands. This way, you can be sure that you are teaching them the material that is right for them and is at their level.

Third, when you are teaching them to write you should be sure that you are making the process enjoyable. There are many different ways that you can teach someone and you want to make the process fun for your specific student.

Start by making a game out of the process. This way, you are not focusing on the grammar sides of writing or the mechanics of writing but instilling a love of writing and a desire to be the best writer that the individual can possibly be.

Teach them about the form of self-expression that can come from writing. When they are able to understand what writing can do for them they will have a much better ability to latch on to the idea of writing and really flourish within the subject.

Take the time that you need to figure out how you are going to be creative. The more creative you are with the process the better off you will be roping them in and holding their attention throughout an entire lesson.

When you are working with the mechanics of the language or the grammar aspect of writing be sure that you have worksheets. When you work with worksheets the student will have small goals to accomplish.

A worksheet is much more manageable than a workbook. Not only is the worksheet more manageable but you will also be able to be sure that you are able to point out that there is an end in sight.

Make an overarching goal when you are using worksheets. You can make sure that you are able to help them work towards a specific number of completed worksheets and when they reach their goal you can have a reward ready for them.

To reward the student use an activity that you know they will enjoy. This way, they are able to work hard towards a goal and they know that you are going to encourage them and follow through with a reward.

Teaching writing to an ESL student can be difficult but is possible. Work hard to help your ESL student excel in writing.
