Having A Voice And Being Heard: Niche Marketing

Charles H. Duell, Commissioner of the U.S. Patent Office, in 1899 spoke the infamously mistaken words “Everything that can be invented has been invented.”

Consider for a second if this were really the case. Consider all that would not exist: computers, cell phones, electronic televisions, powered airplanes, antibiotics, iPods, and the list goes on and on.

If there were nothing new under the sun as far as inventions go since 1899, the world would be a slow place. It is difficult to zero in on which particular invention mentioned above the world could not live without as each seems to depend on the other for its creation. The one that arguably made the largest difference to our world as we know it today is the internet. The internet has made it possible for us to discover and explore our world and the people within it as no other invention ever did.

The internet has allowed regular people to discover their passions and have shown them they are not alone it what excites them. Now we can discover someone a million miles away sharing our love of something, regardless of what that “something” is. The internet is a platform where everyone, everywhere can say whatever they want on any topic.

There are more outlets available for people to experience the things they love. Life is becoming more specific in many ways. This is largely due to the rapidly changing and advancing powers of technology.

With the internet we can discover and explore in depth all the things we really care about in our lives. People who grew up during the internet era must feel that the internet and their generation have matured together.

Folks in their 20's and 30's have seen the internet come to life because they experienced life before and after the internet. They have seen many tasks go from offline to online. Look at it - books are read online, shopping is done online, earning an income is done online, talking to friends in foreign lands is done online no matter the difference in time zones. We can listen to music online then download it to our cell phone. We can plan a detailed vacation without ever having to ask a travel agent, though they are all on online as well, if you wish to use their services.

The internet has opened whole new worlds and whole new ways of life for us. It gives everyone a voice. Not unlike Andy Warhol's saying that everyone can now be famous for 15 minutes because of the new media, now everyone can be someone because of the internet. We can make something all our own. We can write whatever we want on any topic whatsoever. The internet provides a spot for us to jot our thoughts and feelings down and show them to the general internet public or just a few exclusive internet friends. Free speech has never risen to such heights.

In the end the internet makes discovery simple. We can visit websites created by others and we make our own for others to visit. The world is more intimate due to the internet. Perhaps people's differences aren't so vast as once thought. Someone in Wales is listening to the same tune you are and someone in New Zealand just bought the same backpack you did online. The internet has brought us together in ways never before imagined and has crumbled many walls that used to stretch between us.
