One of the major fears new pet owners can have when they welcome a kitten or cat into their home can centre on communication. From the outset, it can seem something of a challenge to communicate effectively with a feline - after all, they can't talk.
In spite of this, the secret to understanding your cat is all about learning about their meowing. The fact is that you can learn an awful lot by listening to your feline's mewling - but it takes time and persistence to get the hang of it.

So, why do cats meow? For a whole host of reasons. You may not realise it, but a cat's voice is just as individual as any human's. Some cats can be very talkative. Others may seldom make a noise. How noisy your cat is will depend on his breed (for example, Siamese cats are known for their shrill wail) and his individual personality.

Knowing what to look out for
In many ways, a meow could merely be a cry for attention. However, you'll need to determine why he is looking for attention in the first place. For example, if he's pacing the kitchen meowing, it's a certain sign that he's hungry. Or if he starts mewling when you arrive home from work, he is most likely simply pleased to see you and looking for a cuddle.

The time of year can also play a part in determining the reason for meowing - if it's mating season, a female cat will want to loudly promote her availability to males. If your cat is out and about, it is common to hear a frustrated meowing noise if she is unable to reach a prey she's got her eye on. Listen out for spitting, hissing and shrieking - these are typically defensive or aggressive cries. Purring is always a sign of satisfaction.

When should you act?
While nearly all meowing sounds are nothing to worry about and can be acted on simply, in a few cases they can be a sign of something more serious. If you have a quiet cat that suddenly becomes noisy, or vice-versa, this is when you should be concerned as it may perhaps be a sign of sickness or distress. In this situation, you may want to ask yourself, where is my nearest vet to get my feline pal checked out. In lots of cases, you may have nothing to worry about - but it is always better to be safe than sorry.
