With all the major gardeners preparing for the RHS Flower show amateur gardener will turn their minds to their garden plants and flowers. No matter whether you are thinking of cottage garden plants or plants for your country estate, you can do no better than keep a watchful eye on Mother Nature’s seasonal signals. If you read the signs right you will be able to plant your garden according to nature's calendar and avoid the pitfalls of planting too early or too late.

Typically May is a worrying time for gardeners as late frosts can catch you out, although this year it would appear that we may have escaped the worst of the weather. In fact it looks as though we are ahead of the season at the moment. Preparation is the watchword for the month of May. Garden plants and shrubs should be tidied up. But keep the fleece handy just in case we get caught out by one of these late frosts. Beds and borders should be cleared of weeds and leaves and the soil prepared for biennials and perennials. Bedding plants can also be planted out so now is the time to start looking for your garden plants online.

June is always a busy month for the keen gardener with general garden maintenance consuming the majority of your time. Seedlings should be watered early in the morning and again late evening particularly if you have had a hot summer’s day. Whilst watering inspect the plants as this is a great opportunity for you to spot any possible problems before they develop. Watch out for the start of any diseases or infestations like greenfly and treat them early before they get out of hand.

When the weather is hot probably the single most important thing you can do in the garden is to ensure the plants are kept well watered. If you have a vegetable plot in your garden it is even more crucial to keep the plants well watered. When it comes to watering the most important thing to remember is that you should never water in the heat of the day and always avoid watering in direct sunlight. Do your watering either early in the morning before the sun is too high or late in the evening once the sun has gone down. You should also ensure that the roots of your plants get a good soaking don’t just sprinkle water over the leave.

Check your fruit bushes and trees for harmful pest and diseases, and treat as necessary. Set up a net frame around your soft fruit bushes and plants like strawberries, tomatoes, berries etc. These will be a superb meal for a variety of birds and you could soon find your plants stripped of their fruit.

In June you will also be able to plant later season vegetable and flower plants so now is the time to check out the garden plants for sale at your online florists.
