Nails are crucial in that they carry out different jobs. Without them, it will be impossible to carry out many things.

Nails assist the animals cinch and tear the food they eat. Humans who are blessed with eating utensils don’t count on nails to eat. But, they cover-up the ends of the fingers and toes, and allow us grip little things.

Neither do nails perspire because they don’t have sweat glands. What gets moist is the skin around the nails. Because they are dead, nails don’t require food or nourishment. Their pink color originate from the little blood vessels underneath.

The nail plates, contrary to the prevalent belief, never breathe. So they don't require oxygen. But, the nail beds and the cuticles are live cells and they do need oxygen, vitamins and minerals.

Toenails are harder than fingernails but they develop faster. It requires about four to six months for them to grow back while toenails need from 12 to 18 months. Customarily, men’s nails develop faster than women’s nails. Children and pregnant women too have swift growing nails.

Climatic conditions too affect nail growth. Nails develop faster in hot weather and during daytime, than in cold weather and at night. Nails develop at different speeds on both hands. If you are right-handed, its natural that nails on your right hand will develop faster than the nails on your left hand and vice versa. Worry, typing on a computer etc. promotes nail growth.

Nails mirror a person’s state of health. When you are not well, it will definitely display in your nails. One of the most regular nail headaches is onychomycosis, a fungal infection of the nails that may create your nails awful and deformed. To avoid this, take good care of your nails by rinsing and drying them meticulously, putting on well- aired footwear and cotton socks that take in perspiration, and using a good foot-powder.
