It's funny how quickly new technologies can go from sci-fi to humdrum these days. Take for instance GPS. We've become accustomed to being able to get directions in our cars, to looking to our phones to tell us what restaurants are within five miles of us, and even to letting ourselves be tracked and "checked in" to different establishments so that our friends can find us wherever we are.

This technology has been integrated into so many aspects of our life, some useful, some superficial, and we hardly ever take the time to wonder about where it came from or what its potential uses could be. So if you're feeling a little blase about GPS, here are a few reasons to remember that it's pretty amazing.

GPS, or Global Positioning System, was first developed by the Department of Defense in the Seventies. The system consists of dozens of satellites orbiting the earth. When you activate your GPS device, it sends out a signal to all of those satellites, which in turn triangulate your exact position on the globe. Pretty cool, huh?

Though the uses for GPS that spring to mind most readily these days tend towards the superficial, there are a lot of practical uses out there such as, emergency services tracking, theft prevention, surveying, map-making, and fleet tracking systems. GPS has been used for a long time to locate stolen cars, but now it's also being used to locate missing pets! How's that for sci-fi?

The benefits don't stop at the protection of personal property though; GPS can also help protect your personal safety. Before they were equipped with GPS, 911 calls made from cell phones had no point of reference. If a person was unable to give an accurate description of their location, rescue workers would lose precious time trying to find them.

GPS has also simplified a lot of difficult jobs. One of the best examples of this is the application of GPS to fleet management systems. Fleet management involves the tracking and maintaining of any vehicles in a company's fleet, such as cars, trucks, and even ships.

This means needing to know where all of your vehicles are, needing to keep track of driver behavior, and needing to manage fuel usage just to name a few duties. All of this is pretty complicated, but now through the use of GPS and fleet tracking systems, it's possible for much of this data to be collected automatically and analyzed by software, thus allowing the fleet manager to make necessary adjustments to protect efficiency.

With new technology appearing every day, it is easy to forget to appreciate the ones we've become familiar with. Next time you encounter GPS, whether you're using a Sat Nav in your car, logging into your fleet tracking systems, or even just looking for a good nearby Chinese place on your smart phone, take a moment to remember the technology that is making that possible for you, and rejoice that you live in the future!
