Five Great Benefits Of Voluntary Work

By: Stella Manson

Volunteer work can be one of the more self-fulfilling and rewarding activities we can take part in. Despite this, however, volunteering is something very few of us take up no matter how interested we are. Why is this? Well for a lot of people, the biggest reason goes back to that old mantra; that time is money. Unfortunately many of us feel we are already busy with our day jobs and what spare time we have available to us seems far too precious to spend working for no monetary reward. Another major reason is that although people like the idea of volunteering, a lot of the focus is on what you can do for the organisation many people may feel that they, as a volunteer, are not being taken into consideration.

The following explains why volunteering can help you by shaping you as a person and providing you with skills that can benefit you in life:

Firstly, confidence. Confidence is one of the greatest assets you can have. Many people may feel that you are either born with confidence but this is simply not the case. If you put yourself in situations that are out of your comfort zone on a regular basis and work closely with other, high functioning, confident people you will gradually become more confident, not just socially, but you will gain confidence in your abilities.

Secondly, making friends. This is probably my favourite reason to should consider volunteer work, there are very few situations as good as this to meet likeminded people. The people you meet can become friends for life and this is because you share something in common. In everyday life it can be quite difficult to meet people with the same interests as you and so volunteering is definitely something that can help with this.

Thirdly, volunteering can be genuinely good fun. Doing fulfilling work around like minded people makes volunteering great fun. There can be a great team atmosphere that you would not usually get in a normal working environment.

The fourth reason is employability. Volunteer work looks great on anyone's CV, it makes the candidate look good for many reasons, it displays dedication, self-motivation, commitment and it shows a person can be altruistic. The vast majority of employers will understand and value the benefits volunteer work can bring.

The fifth and final benefit of volunteer work is personal happiness. Studies have shown that people who help others are happier people. The rewarding feeling of helping others can't be beaten and will give you a whole new perspective on life.
