Fishing Tackle Lures

By: Jacque Crook

If life were only so simple as to have fishing tackle lures simply be the classic hook with a worm that we so often think of when many hear the word "fishing". It is hard not to conjure up a mental picture of Mark Twain's Tom Sawyer with a simple cane pole resting on his shoulder with a string, a simple hook attached, and a can of worms. At its barest-bones level that is what fishing is, but fishing today is anything but bare-boned. With fly rod and reel combinations sometimes running in the thousands of dollars, many people take their fishing very seriously. With all of the different types of fishing available between both fresh and salt water venues, the life of the fisherman is just not that simple and the selection of what fishing lures to use isn't that simple either.

There are two key issues that need to be addressed before continuing a discussion about fishing tackle lures, and they are:

1. The type of fishing that you intend to do

2. The type of fish that you would like to catch

Selection of fishing tackle will vary greatly depending on the style of fishing that you are looking to perform. With a wide variety of styles from fly fishing, casting, using bobbers, trolling, using downriggers, surf fishing, deep sea fishing, and the list goes on, but you get the idea. There are many varieties in the type of fishing that are available and the fishing tackle lures that you will need are dependent upon the style of fishing that you will undertake.

Further complicating this equation is the fact that certain fish like to eat different things. Getting to know which fishing lures have been designed for which species of fish is a real attention grabber as well. With lures varying from flies, to jiggers, to spinners to on and on and on, getting educated on the type of lures to use can become a lifetime learning process. In addition to the type of lures available, one must also take the colors of the lures into consideration as well as certain color lures will work better at different depths and with different lighting conditions.

When asked, "What's the most important thing to learn about fishing tackle lures?"expect a simple and direct answer - everything! Fortunately, a number of lures will work well across a number of different species of fish, so the biggest issue often becomes being able to digest all of this information and retain it for future use on your next fishing trip. Needless to say, with all of the variations in the types of fishing and the types of fish themselves, it is easy to spent a small fortune on gearing up your tackle box to have a broad enough selection to meet every situation.

One thing will be sure; if you can master the matching and selection of specific lures to specific situations, you will enjoy unparalleled success and derive hour upon hour of enjoyment and satisfaction. For those that are looking for something a little less demanding, there is always the good old fashion hook and worm combination that still does wonders in a pinch.
