Financial Management Among Printing Press Workers

By: Brad Kartel

It is common practice that many local commercial printing companies pay their workers based on the daily minimum wage set by the law. And since most printing jobs are rushed, employees find themselves working overtime to finish the projects. With that, they are paid overtime rates by the hour. Most of them are also provided with meals and transportation after work, especially if they finish really late. These are the things that commercial printers should make a budget for because a lot of print jobs have to be finished on schedule, even if the client submitted their materials rather late.

Even with their regular income, many workers in commercial printers are buried deep in debt from their employees and other lending companies. They clamor and clamor for more, but it seems that even those who have higher salaries still have the scourge.

a. Higher Salaries Not the Answer. In most cases, bigger salaries are not the answer to the workers’ cry for more money. Even when the company would give them allowance or other benefits, that would satisfy them for a few months and then they would go back to grumbling. Sometimes, even the added benefits are not being appreciated. They continue to complain to their management. And many printing presses had been infiltrated by the labor union primarily because of this unrest among the employees. While some labor disputes are resolved, some are not, which lead the company to just close the shop.

b. Set Priorities Straight. While the clamor is for higher wages, what the workers need is to set their priorities straight. If their spending habits are not straightened or if they do not prioritize their spending, they will continue to ask for more money not matter how much they are already earning. Sometimes, more money is not the answer to the problem but rather a change in attitude. There are people who earn a lot but still live the hand to mouth existence. Some things have to change and sometimes it is not their salaries that need increasing. It is their attitude towards money and spending.

c. Financial Management Seminars. One of the solutions to this problem is for the management to sponsor a financial management seminar. They can hire a financial expert or lifestyle coach to hold talks among the employees. It does not have to be several days but maybe one Saturday afternoon when the press can close and everyone can attend and listen. This should be obligatory, like a paid afternoon for work because some people could easily be absent because after all, it is a free afternoon. The incentive would be; it is going to be a salaried afternoon. While this will mean expense for the company, it is a small price to pay for happier and more productive workers. This could happen like once a year when the management can invite different speakers to do this. Additionally, the company may also invite a debt counselor to help your employees manage their finances and get out of debt. That could be part of their benefits.

A local commercial printing company should really look into this situation of their employees. While they might think that after they give proper wages to their workers then they are already done with their dues, happy workers in a printing company could mean faster and more efficient work. So this problem should really be addressed.
