Filling Out A Survey Sheet At A Dental Office

By: John Chambers

I remember my dentist 10 years ago who knew what I was talking about and actually did something about it. Waiting for me to get numb takes a while but he had the patience to wait for that time before proceeding.

Also, he viewed my x rays and made some trials to ascertain that the normally targeted nerve with novocain really spread to several locations for more effective anesthesia with just one shot. I am not taken as serious as this by the dentists in the area to which I moved so I stopped going for dental visits.

An unbearable tooth pain pushed me to gather every courage I had to get past this anxiety. A dentist recommended by one of my wife's friends took a look at my mouth. After trying the novocain on me several times, he said he needs to refer me to special dentists who can deal with my case and their office is in San Francisco.

The office was cozy and it was comforting to know that they are among the few clinics that offer general anesthesia for every dental work. A very detailed survey was handed to me by their staff, which covered almost all of my issues with dental appointments.

A familiar instinct of fleeing was even described in one of the sections. The survey asked if I cancel dental appointments continually and I said yes.

I had to be under general anesthesia to get every needed procedure done once and for all. Most of the patients will not afford an every visit general anesthesia. I paid a little more than $1,000 just for the anesthesia, the procedures cost extra.

Aside from the deep cleaning, they needed to prep on side of my mouth to put on a crown. They shaved down one tooth because the surface was damaged and prepped another tooth for root canal work.

I could not remember the duration of the entire procedure. If general anesthesia was not part of the process, I need to go back three more times to complete the procedure and it is not that appealing. Basing solely on the cost of having local anesthesia four times and skipping work four times as well and the price of one appointment but with general anesthesia, you can easily make up your mind.

I did not suffer any ailment after the general anesthesia but I could not enter wakefulness. My wife once had four wisdom teeth cut out in one procedure under general anesthesia, and she was as sick as a dog for three days.

My insurance does not cover the sedation but they did shoulder all the other work up and this is approximately $1,000. One of the teeth required a separate root canal surgery to be performed by a different dentist with sedation, however.

Because of this, my insurance that year got maxed out quite early. This is probably exactly what I will resort to if this happens to my mouth again.

I have no idea how I will go about it if it was only a local anesthesia that they used on me other than probably just flee. After that major procedure, I just return for oral prophylaxis which is not that complicated. But I still have kind of a dread of dental procedures that I'll probably never get over.
