The health care industry is one of the most rapidly expanding and changing industries in the world. In fact, they are just now beginning to utilize technology that has already been present in the commercial retail industry for the last decade or so. This includes bar code scanning, electronic inventory management systems and scanning and archiving of documents. Many hospitals are now converting their hard copy charts, medical records and documentation processes to an EMR.

EMR, or electronic medical record, is a process where a facility can automate and make available the entire patient visit, procedures, documentation and charting electronically. By installing an EMR, providers can more easily communicate patient conditions and outcomes with other providers. This is seamless, fast and secure.

Regardless of where the patient, doctor, hospital or provider is, the electronic nature of the electronic medical record makes is easy to communicate and report results. With the click of a button, the information can travel great distances in an instant. The documents are secure and can be encrypted and sent over the internet or even wirelessly. Many hospitals and providers also have tablets or hand held devices that have the capability of handling these documents.

While there tends to be some push back and resistance initially from the physician community, once they have converted to this method, they soon realize the benefits. It is less costly, much faster and more reliable in terms of data efficiency. It could also bring about staffing efficiencies and increased productivity.

With this technology, a doctor in a hospital can communicate electronically with a nursing home, home health agency or another doctor in another hospital across the state without the use of a telephone or fax machine. This method of data communication is becoming not only an industry standard, but a government sponsored and supported transition.

There are state and federal programs that provide financial incentives to hospitals and providers that can convert to EMR. It would be wise that if you are currently not looking into this, to at least consider researching the funding and programs that are available. There are many hospitals you could call on for reference, or sync up with a consultant to help you navigate through the process.

Many independent as well as physician group practices typically install computer systems that already have this as a part of the installation. It is a standard that many of them are already used to and readily accept. Most of the large health care information system companies and manufacturers are now building systems with EMR included. Those that are on older versions within these systems can upgrade to the newer product offerings.

It is important to understand that the benefit of an electronic medical record also helps patient care and quality. The fast and accurate transmission of patient data greatly enhances the physician or hospitals ability to react to treatments and plan of care. It also reduces errors that are generally a result of lost documentation and illegible documentation. The patient can also receive their own data, if requested, electronically.
