Ego

By: Struktur Wasser

A lot of people who talk about spiritual matters like to discuss Ego. Many even claim that Ego must somehow be diminished or even shed entirely in order to achieve the much touted " higher levels of consciousness". I was watching the tail end of an episode of Oprah yesterday devoted to this subject, of ridiculing the concept of Ego. And this got me thinking.

To have an Ego means you have a conception of your self, separate and distinct from your environment, including other people. That is, you are a unique body occupying space and you consciously can feel only this body. You do not feel the impact when someone else stubs their toe, or the sensation of taste and crispness when someone else bites into an apple. You have ideas and feelings about yourself, who you are, what you possess, where you are going, and how you rank in the world, this is Ego. Some Egos rank themselves too highly, and this is called Pride. Some Egos think too meanly of themselves, and this is called Shame.

It seems to me that a healthy one capable of growth is the desired result most people should be seeking and not elimination of Ego. It is after all essential for your physical survival, but an unhealthy Ego can be a handicap to survival, and there is no more clear a demonstration of this than the act of suicides.

According to Oprah, and many so-called Spiritualists the Ego is the source of all unhappiness preventing you from achieving the ultimate state of spiritual bliss.

If I come home early from work to find my best friend in bed with my wife, do I just say, I won't get angry or hurt or feel betrayed, because that is just my Ego talking and the Ego is bad? If a bunch of derelict strangers walk into my home and begin taking liberties, drinking my beer, eating my food, sitting about on my furniture like they owned it, would I be enlightened if I could ignore it, and not give in to Ego? Would an enlightened one even offer them his wife's services to supplement their good time with just in case they were otherwise too shy to ask?

So I went and parused some David Hawkins videos today and found he actually had something interesting to say on the subject that actually made some sense.

"One can view the spiritual ego as the spiritual manifestation of one's Karma. So that undoing the ego is the same as undoing one's Karma...the ego is Karma, the ego is Karmic of creation....one's inner attitude towards that ego is one's spiritual state"...

Hawkins recognises the ego as the most important part of us, and that when it is changed, so is your destiny! If it is gone, then you must be dead!
