Easter Origins

By: K Vanwoerkom

Have you ever thought about where the legend of the Easter Bunny came from? I mean do bunnies and Easter eggs really have anything to do with Jesus' resurrection? The conclusion is "no". The tradition of the Easter Bunny dates back to the 13th century and comes from pre-Christian Germany. The pagan people of that period worshipped several gods and goddesses. The goddess of spring and rebirth was known as Eostra, which is where the word Easter came from. As you may know, spring is the season of rebirth. As a result of this, Eostra's representation was the rabbit. The rabbit signifies fertility since rabbits are well renowned for their excessive rate of reproduction. Eventually, this depiction of Eostra lead to other stories and in the 1500s, the first account of the Easter Bunny was documented. Now since you have learned where the Easter Bunny originates from you're almost certainly wondering about the eggs. Eggs have been a sign of fertility for hundreds of years and were likely integrated in early pagan festivals of spring. As Christianity gained popularity in Europe and in Germany, previous pagan traditions began to unite with new Christian holidays. These days, we say that Easter eggs signify Jesus' resurrection.
Over time the Easter Bunny story developed yet further and evolved into what we know it as today. Similar to the legend of Santa Clause, German families would say to their little ones that if they were good the Easter Bunny would visit and lay eggs that that could be traded for candy and various goodies. People began the tradition of creating nests for the eggs and these nests eventually transformed into the cheerful colorful Easter baskets which we have these days. The myth of the Easter Bunny first arrived in the USA in the 1700s when German immigrants came to Pennsylvania. At present, this Easter tradition is a prevalent aspect of our traditions as are scores of other traditions which come from the countries of origin of our immigrant forefathers.
