It’s a well-known fact that drugs are sm aspect of our society and have been for countless years. It’s also known that drug testing is a normal procedure often executed is various situations. The argument whether or not drug testing needs to be a frequent practice has been debated from several different angles. You have those who view this topic from a standpoint of conservatism and then you have those that carry a more liberalist view believing drug tests may be a violation of someone’s entitlement to privacy. Regardless of which stance you choose to position yourself on the matter the point that will forever remain is that drugs are and may continue to be a natural part of our society making drug testing whether random or announced a lasting fixture as well.

Drug testing was originally intended as a means of ensuring safety in such instances as working on a job or operating motor vehicles but as time progressed drug testing practices moved more towards guaranteeing individual conformity to laws set by society. Of course laws must exist in our society to help maintain social order nevertheless in many cases where recreational drugs such marijuana which studies show is much less harmful than alcohol or tobacco, is classified as deviant we need to ask the question why? It may be easily argued that drug testing has become more of a way to characterize a particular by probing in their personal life. Jimmy Hendricks when asked his opinion on drug use on a television interview replied by saying, “Using drugs is a personal thing and as long as what your doing doesn’t hurt anyone it shouldn’t matter”.

It cannot be argued that using drugs while operating a car or while working is unacceptable especially if your task is something which involves various hazardous conditions. But think about those recreational users who don't use anything but in their down time and pose little or no threat to anyone? Those who come to work on time everyday sober and work exceptionally well. Are these individuals not allowed the exact same personal privacy as those that take a drink or smoke a cigarette during their spare time? Drug testing is necessary in certain cases but society should be more careful and selective as to when to conduct drug tests. The point being conveyed here is whatever someone does in their spare time is their personal business and really should remain so unless given a good reason why it shouldn’t be.

Drug use whether abusive or recreational will always be a part of our society but the laws regulating drug use should really be focused more on those drugs and drug users that pose a threat to our community. Drug testing without probable cause is only a way of probing into a person’s personal life and often ends in utilizing different methods of passing drug tests. Of course there might be some readers that may totally disagree with the position presented in this report even so, you cannot argue the statistical facts that alcohol and tobacco have ended far more lives than most illegal drugs consumed by the average person yet if either of those two substances show up on a drug test, it’s considered normal. Our drug testing laws are made to protect and maintain order, not to promote hypocrisy and the violation of any person’s right to privacy.
