Developing Strong People Skills

By: Jack Landry

There are many things that you will need to become familiar with and do as a salesperson in order to represent your company to the best of your ability. Your company will be depending on you to make it profitable and to bring in revenues.

One of the critically important abilities that you develop is the ability to work well and talk to people. People skills are vital to being able to develop a relationship quickly and convincing the other person that he or she should buy the product or service that you are presenting.

There are many things you can do to develop better people skills. The first thing that you will want to make sure you do is realize that everyone is different.

As a result, you will need to be flexible in your approach to make the sale. Even though it may seem like there is a normal category in all of the categories of people, there is not.

The normal category is a figment of your imagination when you subconsciously think that normal people are those that talk and communicate like you do. However, the majority of people probably do not really fit into this category.

The best approach will vary from person to person. When you realize that you will need to vary your approach for every person, you will be able to be much more effective as a salesperson.

One of the most basic things you can vary when it comes to communication is the method of communication. Some people will relate better to charts and graphs, others to testimonies of previous customers, and others to emotionally moving messages.

Your sales technique should be customized to meet the preferences of each potential customer. It may be a little difficult to determine the best approach right when you meet the person, but you should strive to find out what it is as soon as you can.

It is also important to realize that different people will have different reasons to purchase something. For example, a business person will be looking to advance his or her company in some way as well as his or her position in that company.

Meanwhile, a mother will be seeking to protect her children and to provide them with the things that they need to be successful in life. Others may be seeking monetary gain, recognition from others, or greater ease and comfort.

Determining what the motivation is for each person can help you form the best method of approach for an individual person. The second thing you will want to make sure that you do is learn how to listen.

Listening is key to building a relationship of trust. If you do not listen, you will not be able to build a level of trust with the other person significant enough for them to go ahead and make the purchase.

Being a good communicator often really means that you are a good listener. A good listener makes someone else feel like they are understood.

If they feel like they are understood, they will feel like they can trust your opinion because you understand their situation. As a result, they will be much more likely to make a purchase from you.

One of the things that gets in the way of really listening to the other person is a difference in goals. For example, one person may be listening for information while the other is talking in order vent stress.

The information that the first person gains will probably be skewed because the second person is talking through a lot of stress. In addition, the second person will feel like the first person is not really listening because they did not receive the support that they wanted.

In order to relay the message that you are really listening to the other person, you will need to show that you are genuinely interested in the other person. You can do this in a variety of different ways such as making eye contact and avoiding distracting body movements.

In addition, you can ask questions that will give you more information and which will show that you are listening and processing what the other person is saying. The more you learn about the other person, the easier it will be to find a common ground to stand on when you move to make your sales pitch.

As you develop good people skills, you will be able to become a talented salesperson. This is critical to the success of your company.
