Choosing the Right Navigation System for Your Car

By: Tom Selwick

If you drive frequently for business, travel, or any reason, having a navigation system you can rely on can save you lots of frustration and grief. There is nothing worse than getting lost when you are on a timetable-say goodbye to the frustration of bad directions by getting a reliable navigation system.

When you begin to start shopping for the right system for you, you may find that there are many different ones to choose from. Selecting the right one can be a little confusing at times, as each one comes with different special features.

The more research you do on the different product and what they have to offer, the more likely you are to find the one that will be the best fit for you. It also important to find a device that will fit within your budget, as the price range can differ very greatly.

Think about the different features that are most important to you, and think about making a list so that you can see what your top priorities are. Some of the things you may want to consider is the coverage of the maps, accuracy and detail, quality and speed of different route calculations, the storage capacity, easy usability, etc.

Consider a few different options-do you want a device that tells you what road signs are coming up? Do you want something that tells you exactly how fast you are going and what the local speed limit is?

Each product will have some differences when it comes to these categories and features. When it comes to map coverage, make sure that all of the states are included that you may be driving in-it is also a good idea have something that includes Canada, Alaska, Hawaii, etc.

You do not want to purchase something that does not cover everywhere you want to visit. You may even want to consider an international product if you do a lot of driving while overseas-whatever your need may be, there is sure to be something that fits what you are looking for.

Maps used by navigation systems are usually at least a year or two out of date. If you travel on roads with recent changes, you should look to see if the changes are included in the navigation system's maps.

You may want to update your system on the internet frequently, to stay up to date with all of the changes. New freeway exits, housing developments, road, road signs, and more will pop up frequently, and you want to know what to expect when you are driving.

Route quality can be difficult to compare, but it is one of the more important features in everyday use. Poor quality routes include unnecessary turns and detours or can take you on roads you want to avoid.

The last thing you want is to have to deal with hard to follow instructions, that lead you on longer paths. Generally, the higher quality the product and price you purchase, the less you will struggle with this complication.

If you cannot take a test drive with the product you are thinking about buying, look on the web for reviews and discussion topics where users share their actual experiences with a particular model. Sometimes the reviews of actual users will help you to know if something is not quite as good as it seems.

Many newer navigation systems come pre-loaded with a full set of maps, but do not rule out models with less storage capacity if the areas you drive in are fairly predictable. If you drive in many different cities while on business, you will probably want something with more memory to accommodate all of the different maps you will need.

Spoken directions can be very helpful so that you do not have to constantly be looking at the screen. This will also help you to be a safer driver while on the road.

Pay attention to how quickly the system processes position and map data to keep your navigation instructions up-to-date. Extra accuracy does not do much good if the system is too slow to make use of it.

As stated previously, the more research you do on all of the different products available and features included, the happier you will be with your purchase long term. You do not want to invest in a navigator, only to want to replace it years down the line-do it right the first time!
