Choosing Jewellery for Your Wedding Dress

By: Michael Richards

For very dressy dresses, the general rule is fine jewelry. Most women feel dressed to the nines in an evening or cocktail dress. So, let's start by looking at what types of jewelry goes best with dresses for occasions such as proms, cocktail parties and formal events.

For formal occasions, the jewelry selected shouldn't compete with the evening bag or the dress. Instead of choosing oversize, chunky jewelry, it is best to stick to a very, clean look. Of course, it goes without saying that when choosing jewelry, a large part of the selection process depends on the personality of the wearer. What may look tacky on one woman might look very classy and elegant on the next one.

Here are some things to keep in mind when choosing jewelry for a dress:

1. Select plain earrings if the dress has a high neckline or a one shoulder design, stick to small, delicate hoops, diamond or pearl studs. No necklace is needed.

2. If wearing gloves, a hat or if there is some ornate beading, sequins or rhinestone accents included on the dress, jewelry is not necessary.

3. Create looks that compliment the design of the dress and not conflict, jewelry should compliment the wearer and accentuate their features.

4. Streamline, never add hair accessories when wearing jewelry.

5. For formal attire, always let the dress speak for itself, stick to small additional accessories such as brooches, bracelets and rings.

For daytime wear, there are no tried and true rules. Jewelry can be anything that fits the personality of the wearer or whatever they desire to wear personally. Professionally, of course, it depends on if the woman is dressing for herself or for some type of corporate environment. Then again, there still aren't any hard rules. Some offices are particular about what their workers wear in order to project a professional appearance. In most corporate offices, conservative business dresses are preferred and jewelry should be selected accordingly.

Jewelry is really all about the individual preferences of the wearer. Some women like to stick to all the old, traditional rules of yesterday for jewelry and dresses such as never mixing the elements of gold, silver and bronze. Today, more than ever women are encouraged to break free from restrictive fashion rules and select dresses and jewelry according to what looks best on them. Fashion trends for jewelry are somewhat fleeting, because styles change so fast, it literally seems as if trends come and go overnight, there is simply no way to predict what type of jewelry is "in or "out" as far as what style is in and what is not.

Fashion jewelry trends are most important to young, fashion conscious women. These are the women who may feel slightly compelled to dress according to current style and they usually select jewelry from what is most popular or what everyone else is wearing.
