Building a Strong Relationship With Your Supplier

By: Tom Selwick

Building a good relationship with your supplier or manufacturer is critical to the success and growth of your company. Unfortunately, this is often easier said than done.

There are several ways that this relationship can be built though. The first and most critical element that you understand and consider is that a relationship is two sided.

Even though you place the orders, you cannot think of your supplier as your servant. Instead, you must understand that you are two partners that work together.

You must be a good customer and he or she much to be a good supplier. There are many qualities that you will want to look for when you are striving to select a good manufacturer in the first place.

These qualities will be an indicator of how well the job will be performed and whether or not you will be able to get along well. The first thing you will want to look for is quality in the products that the manufacturer produces.

As they have control over the making of the product from beginning to end, you will want to make sure that they will do everything properly. It is important that you are picky when it comes to quality because your customers will be picky.

If the customers do not want the product, they will not pay you, and then you will not be able to pay the manufacturer, even though you will be obligated to. The better the product, the more purchases there will be, and the more success you will realize.

The second thing you will want to look for is whether or not the manufacturer meets that deadlines that he or she sets and that the deadlines are reasonable for your needs.

If the products are consistently delivered late, there will be a lot of stress added to your relationship and you will decide in the end that it is more hassle than it is worth, and you will have to find a new supplier.

The timeliness of the supplier will reflect directly on you because you are the face of the company. When customers do not receive what they were promised, they will not look behind the scenes at the supplier.

They will simply blame you and find another person to purchase the product from. It is important that timeliness is a trait that you look for and find as this can also minimize your inventory.

Minimizing your inventory can minimize your losses if something should go wrong, which means that you will need to have less cash on hand.

The third thing you should look for in a streak of competitiveness. If a company is always striving to do a little better than its competitors, they will provide quality services to you.

This will in turn allow you to become more competitive and to provide better services than your competitors. In turn, you may gain more of the market share, all because of your suppliers.

There are many ways to be competitive including pricing, quality, reliability, technological breakthroughs, and knowledge of industry trends. Anything your manufacturer can help you with, the better.

The fourth thing that you will want to look for is innovation. If the supplier can make your product better in some way, then you will owe him or her a lot as it can significantly boost your revenue.

Do not take offense when they make a suggestion. Instead, listen to them because they work with the product everyday and they have hands on experience.

If you do not listen to the suggestion, you could be making a mistake that will lose you thousands in revenue. A good manufacturer will come up with new and better ways to make your product and he or she will not be afraid to suggest these changes to you.

The fifth thing you will want to look for is financing. As long as you consistently pay on time, are loyal, and considerate to your manufacturer, you may be able to set up a financing solution once you have hit the growth stage for your company.

This can be a very valuable fall back. However, if you have built a good relationship with your supplier, they may be willing to work with you.

The financing help that may be offered includes postponed payments, extended terms on new purchases, loans, and even investments. Of course, you will need to prove your value as a customer and you will need to show that you respect the manufacturing company as well.
