Bournemouth E-Commerce Solutions

By: Lloyd Roberts

With a growing crop of businesses in the Dorset area, the provision of Bournemouth e-commerce solutions by local providers has expanded massively over the past 5 years. Going back to 2005, setting up an e-commerce website would have been far beyond the budgets of most small to medium sized businesses.

Cut forward to 2010 - "web 2.0" has exploded and taken root, the process of creating and maintaining e-commerce solutions tailored to specific business needs has plummeted, and the online shopping market sector is stronger than ever. With lower footfall passing by the shop front, the online shop has become something much more in demand than 5 years ago. These factors in combination make an e-commerce website now both more valuable, and more desirable for many businesses.

Being the first "Fibrecity in the United Kingdom, Bournemounth is one of many cities where thousands of homes and businesses every month are being connected to a massive broadband network that aims to interconnect everyone in the whole UK. This and the fact that the Bournemouth economy is founded primarily on the service sector are two good reasons why e-commerce is imperative. Moreover, e-commerce is an encompassing sphere that includes not only the buying and selling of products but almost all business processes like electronic banking, online marketing, online recruitment, inventory management, electronic data interchange and supply chain management to name a few.

One crucial factor in all of this is implicitly tied into web 2.0. The ability of website owners to publish their own content, customise designs and layouts and integrate their e-commerce websites with other solutions is one factor that has lowered overheads associated with an online shop, and it's something business owners in the Bournemouth area have been embracing. Another very important factor (also related to web 2.0) is the availability now of open source and free online e-commerce packages. Applications such as Magento, nopCommerce, ZenCart and many others have grown into stable, solid, highly customisable solutions which will fit almost any business sector's requirements.

And let's not forget publishing platforms. The web has erupted with easy-to-install (well, we've all heard that, right?), easy to maintain publishing tools such as WordPress, Blogger, Joomla and Drupal. These cater for small businesses, through medium sized firms, right up to managing the website requirements of massive corporations. And they're all available in either open-source or free flavours.

Of course, not everyone can set up or install their own publishing platform, or install their own e-commerce website, but the fact that the coding and testing has been carried out by a group of volunteers, and helped along by a massive community online, really does slash the costs involved.
