Biology Major Scholarships and College Funding

By: Veronica Krully

College biology majors may be preparing for a variety of careers. They could be future doctors or veterinarians. A biology major could be a university professor or a wildlife scientist. And they could leave school with a hill of debt.

Many of these careers require graduate school in addition to undergraduate study. Future biology majors are advised to look for biology scholarships during their college search.

Depending on your area of study several types of biology scholarships may be available to you. Scholarships are given out by need, merit, or a combination of both. There are scholarships depending on your specific biological field of study. Much of this money is distributed in the form of research grants. Research grants are often for particular studies. There may be grants to study certain types of wildlife in certain regions in certain seasons. A school or foundation may, for example, offer money to students studying plant life in the Southeastern United States in the summer.

The majority of biology scholarships are general awards given out by the department. Depending on how a college divides the school of biology, competition for these awards could be tough. The biology department of a school could encompass many students and professors with many different skills, specialties and interests. A biologist interested in agriculture, working to make farms safe and more efficient, works alongside a wildlife biologists focused on protecting the natural habitats of endangered species. Biologists work with animals at the zoo, and study stem cells in state-of-the-art laboratories.
