Become an Expert Marksman

By: Art Gib

Becoming an expert marksman requires a lot of practice and spent ammunition. Even target shooting as a hobby can get costly fast with the price of factory loaded ammo. Many shooters have realized significant savings by reloading their own handgun, rifle, and shotgun ammunition. For common calibers such as .357 Magnum and .30-06, savings as much as thirty percent over the cost of factory loaded ammunition can be realized by reloading your own ammo. The savings can be much greater for more scarce and expensive ammunitions. For avid, frequent shooters, reloading can be both a cost saving and enjoyable hobby.

Reloading your own ammo also gives you control and the ability to customize loads for a particular firearm and/or application with specific loads resulting in increased accuracy or designed for a specific purpose. You may want to reload light loads for practice or use heavier loads for stronger firearms. Hunters often find that a different bullet weight than the factory loads better fits their needs and choice of firearm. Factory loaded ammunition is not available in these variations so reloading is necessary to take advantage of the customized ammunition.

The shipment of loaded ammunition is regulated by the Federal government and is considered Hazardous Material making it more difficult and costly to get needed ammunition if you aren't in an area with a retail store that stocks the particular factory loaded ammunition desired. For more rare firearms it may be impossible to get ammunition any other way than by reloading yourself. The needed reloading equipment and supplies are easily obtainable and are well worth the initial investment for the frequent shooter to reload ammo for self use as well as reload for others if desired.

Though it may seem at first to be a complicated process, with a little practice and the proper equipment reloading is quite easy to do. It does require detailed attention and care to reload safe, precise, and reliable ammunition but it requires only a few steps that can be simply mastered quickly. Reloading equipment can be purchased for about $100 to $500 depending on the number of calibers of handgun and rifle ammunition you want to reload. After that investment the only cost for reloading is for primers, powders, and bullets if you keep and process your once fired brass. Many find that buying once fired brass that has already been cleaned, trimmed, and polished saves enough time and reduces the equipment requirements to be the superior choice. Suppliers also make available a variety of calibers to get you started reloading today.
