There are many different types of lodging scams that you will want to avoid. One of the times when you will need to be particularly careful to avoid scams is when you are making the reservation.

Sadly, thousands and thousands of travelers are taken in by lodging scams through which they end up losing a lot of money. In addition, their vacation is often damaged because of a last minute hurry to find lodging late at night and because of the loss of their budget to spend on souvenirs and other fun activities.

Criminals have become very crafty in how they present themselves. It is important to become familiar with their tricks so that you can avoid being taken in by them yourself.

Most of the time, the main goal of these villains is simply to steal money. However, this can be devastating to your own vacation plans.

While it can be incredibly convenient to make a reservation over the phone or over the internet, you will want to be extremely careful, because this is the playing field of the scammers. Taking a few precautions can help you avoid losing your money.

The first thing you will want to make sure you do is check to make sure that a specific hotel is listed with the local government website. Their property records should be found on the local government website if they are a real place.

You should be able to verify that the owner listed is the actual owner of the hotel as well. By verifying these facts, you will eliminate some of the scams that others have fallen for.

The second thing you will want to do is perform a search on the hotel's address, the landlord's name, and the phone number. The search results should bring up reviews for the hotel and other information.

These reviews can be very helpful in letting you know whether or not you have made a good choice. However, keep in mind that sometimes these reviews can be tampered with, even though precautions have been taken to prevent this.

You may be surprised with the other information that comes up with the search and this may affect your final decision. Of course, if it is a scam, you will probably find some results that will indicate that this is the case.

The third thing you will want to make sure you do is check for the hotel's listing on the Better Business Bureau website. Complaints about various services are also posted here as well as a rating for the quality of the hotel.

Of course, if it is not registered with the Better Business Bureau, you will want to avoid it because it is probably not a legal business and it probably has an unethical reason for avoiding this listing. This will help you know whether or not you are making a good decision.

The fourth thing you will want to do if you are trying to reserve a rental home or apartment is for referrals from previous guests. By talking to those who have stayed there previously, you will be able to get an idea of what it is actually like and whether or not the managers are reputable.

You may also be able to get some good insights into various local attractions that you may want to see. If the rental or hotel passes on all of these checks, you will want to carefully review the written contract.

The written contract should provide the exact date and time when you will have the rental to when you will leave it. It should also specifically state all of the amenities that you are expecting to receive as well as the price and other details that are important to you.

You should make sure that you get a copy of this written statement so that you will be able to prove your case if something goes wrong. Get a copy of this statement and review it to make sure it is correct before you send a payment so that you know exactly what you are supposed to receive.

The fifth thing you will want to make sure you do is be careful when you make the payment. If the owner wants you to pay for the reservation in through a cashier's check, money order, wire transfer, or mailed cash, then you can be pretty sure that it is a scam and you should back out immediately and find somewhere else to stay.

By keeping these things in mind, you will be able to have a very enjoyable vacation. In addition, you will be able to avoid losing money to unethical scammers that would not mind ruining your vacation.
