An Investment in U.S. Coins: A Look at the Many Available Choices

By: Stephanie Elman

Some inexperienced investors are under the impression that it takes a small fortune to buy gold and precious metals, so they end up staying away from the commodity in favor of far riskier propositions such as stocks, bonds, or mutual funds. But you don't have to purchase massive quantities of the precious metal in order to achieve your investment goals. Even if you buy metals in modest amounts, you'll still be able to diversify your portfolio or add value to your IRA account.

That's one reason US bullion coins are so popular these days. For just a few hundred dollars in some cases, you can own a genuine 22k gold coin that is fully guaranteed by the United States Mint as far as weight and content go. You'd be hard-pressed to find a safer or more secure investment than that in any financial market in the world.

If you have a limited budget to work with, here is a quick look at some of the more popular and affordable US coins available from authorized dealers.

* Gold American Eagles
This coin, which shows Lady Liberty on one side and eagles on the other, has been produced annually since 1986. The coin is 22k gold and contains 8% silver and copper to make the coin more durable. American Eagles come in four sizes (1/10 oz., 1/4 oz., 1/2 oz., and 1 oz.) giving you several different price points to choose from if you opt to buy gold in this form.

* Gold American Buffalos
First offered in 2006, American Buffalos have had a much shorter run than American Eagles, but are every bit as popular. This coin features a slightly altered version of the artwork that is found on old Indian Head nickels, making it very easy to identify. It comes in a 1 oz. size with a denomination of $50, but is obviously valued more for its 99.99% 24k gold content than for its potential use as legal tender. This is one of the finest US coins available today, and warrants serious consideration as an investment vehicle.

* Platinum American Eagles
If you want to up the ante and add some truly stunning US coins to your collection, then Platinum American Eagles are just the ticket. Made of 99.95% platinum, this coin has the distinction of bearing a higher face value ($100) than any other coin produced by the United States Mint. In addition, Platinum American Eagles are the only coin with an alternating design scheme on the reverse side, presenting collectors with an excellent incentive to purchase new pieces every year.

* Silver American Eagles
If you're not quite ready to buy gold just yet, Silver American Eagles are a solid alternative. Each 1 oz. coin is composed of 99.95% pure silver, giving you an inexpensive way to put your money into precious metals. Many commodities investors begin by building up a nice collection of Silver American Eagles first before parlaying their holdings into gold.

* Silver Buffalo Rounds
Official US coins are not the only game in town. You can also purchase privately minted "rounds" that look very much like a traditional coin, but are not legal tender. Silver Buffalo Rounds, which are 99.99% pure silver, fall into this category. Buying silver rounds is one of the cheapest ways for you to start a precious metal collection.

Investing in high-quality US coins is an underrated-and therefore often overlooked-means of fortifying your financial position against unexpected economic events. Whether you decide to buy gold, platinum, or silver coins, it is important to take action soon instead of waiting so long that prices rise to a level outside your budgetary range.
