Advanced QHSE Training Mitigates Risk and Liability

By: Art Gib

Risk and liability that cost a company in lost revenue and reduced productivity are a part of every business and can come from surprising and unsuspected directions. The recognition of these risks and areas of potential liability in this litigious age is the reason for the QHSE (Quality, Health, Safety, Environment) management approach. This management system is based on the prevention of human error caused accidents with personnel training and administration. HSE courses and information provided for all company employees from the CEO to the janitorial staff along with the practice of a culture of safety can go far to protect employees from injury and a company from costly liability.

Comprehensive QHSE training helps to reduce incidences and injuries while improving service quality. It identifies areas of risk in a given company at every level and introduces industry proven best practices and strategies to mitigate potential accidents, missteps, and losses. QHSE best practices begins at the top of the management pyramid and the concepts are put into action through planned HSE workshops for employees and enforced until the concepts become a part of the corporate culture. Effective QHSE training includes setting goals and objectives with set performance targets that are reasonable, achievable, and measurable. It requires the entire management team with every supervisor playing a role to embed QHSE best practices to the point where they become an active part of daily routine.

Most traditional HSE courses will deal with the basic HSE information to establish policies and procedures in a company to help protect it from losses. These are often not enough, however, to address the specific needs of a business to encompass a comprehensive list of circumstances that managers can face to provide the tools to deal with them effectively. Too often the limitations of standard training received are only made apparent when a company finds itself in a risk situation that had not been anticipated or planned for. Managers that are untrained to take appropriate and knowledgeable actions when such risks arise can introduce liability with improper response.

It is a fact that QHSE training can never go far enough and is never a completed process. It is a dynamic management approach that requires consistent attention and transparent communication. Advanced HSE information that surpasses basic HSE courses helps the management team to be better able to recognize additional areas of risk to preemptively mitigate those risks and liabilities and better manage the QHSE program to meet company objectives.
