A Jeep is Not Just a Car

By: Andrew Stratton

When a person hears the word "jeep", he or she thinks of something completely different than when the word "sedan" is heard. Jeeps represent adventure while sedans represent sedate transportation. This vehicle is made by the auto manufacturing company known as Chrysler. This vehicle was originally developed for use with the U.S. Army and European troops in combat maneuvers during World War II. It is also one of the original off-road modes of transportations ever made. Off-road vehicles are known for their rugged durability and tough mechanisms. To go "off road" means that a car can be slipped into four-wheel drive and headed off the asphalt or tar surfaces of highways and paved streets. Because of the wheel design and high clearance, these critters can climb mountains, crunch over rocks and zip through deserts. Taking a sedan off of the smooth pavement would likely lead to becoming stuck and needing to call in a tow truck. Taking a jeep off the road leads to a roaring adventure.

Jeeps that are popular today include the Wrangler, Cherokee, Compass, Patriot and Liberty. All of these models' names represent the essence of this product. Patriotic, brave, adventurous and free images are brought up from each of these model names. Cowboys, soldiers, Native Americans and anyone exploring new terrain are conjured up as drivers of these rough-and-tough products. Some models are more appropriate for urbanites as they are sleek SUVs while others are better for climbing mountains, boulders and challenging terrain. These rugged vehicles come with either hard or soft tops and may be converted into convertibles for an open air experience.

Other features that make jeeps extraordinary include excellent suspension capabilities which help with wheel maneuvering and traction. A set of good tires helps as well. These cars have slender body frames and wheel bases that are relatively short. They are powerful but small enough to wedge into less space and light enough to have departure lift off and verve. Some external appearances may be that of a regular SUV, painted in a variety of colors such as gray, black, white, silver or hunter green. They can also be a bit more unique and painted canary yellow with flames or in a camouflage motif.

Owners of these vehicles are so in love with their jeeps that they have formed clubs across the United States and around the world. There are clubs in Guam, Puerto Rico, Germany, Argentina, Canada, Australia and the Virgin Islands. There is also a military division called Military Jeepers. Military Jeepers has over two-thousand members and is open to veterans as well as soldiers who are currently enlisted. Groups often have websites, logos and activities that they do together. Groups also name themselves in ways such as "Canyon Crawlers," "Dust Devils," or "Rough Riders." Both men and women belong to these clubs so that they can enjoy their adventures together.

A Jeep is not just a regular car. It is a beloved vehicle with a substantial history that represents adventure, freedom, patriotism, bravery and fun. Whether a driver goes alone or with a club, there is unexplored territory just waiting to be covered in this SUV.
