A Healthy Diet Can Make You More Productive

By: Jacque Crook

There are a lot of ways you could go about improving your productivity. If you have some cash to spend, you can attend a productivity conference and listen to successful business gurus tell you exactly how to organize your time for maximum profitability. If you're a bit more frugal, you can take a do-it-yourself approach and be more discriminating with how you spend your time. But like most other things, one of the best solutions to your lack of productivity is quite simple.

Maintaining a healthy diet can help you be more productive, and though it might seem like too obvious of a solution, you might be surprised by the benefits of certain foods. Just as getting enough sleep helps you stay more alert, drinking plenty of water and eating foods rich in nutrients will help your brain function better and will give your body the physical energy it needs to succeed. Here are a few reasons to kick the junk food habit and ride the nutrition train to success.

Fewer sick days
If you don't feel as productive as you would like, one of the obvious benefits of a healthy diet is more time in the office. You're much less likely to get sick if you get the vitamins and minerals your body needs, and that is a natural result of maintaining a healthy diet. Vitamin C and other nutrients contribute to a healthy immune system, which means that eating citrus fruits today can help ensure you make it to work tomorrow.

Enhanced, longer-lasting energy
If you're feeling a bit sluggish mid-afternoon, it might be tempting to pick up a snack from the vending machine. Chocolate, potato chips and other junk food will certainly do the trick-they are packed with calories that offer quick energy-but they also bring with them high amounts of fat and sodium that last far longer than the sugar high. Empty calories offer little satisfaction, and what energy they do provide doesn't last long. Instead, keep low-fat nuts, crackers, an apple or baby carrots in your office drawer. Whole grains and the natural sugars in fruit will give you more lasting energy and provide vitamins and minerals you need to stay healthy.

Better overall wellness
Though it's somewhat more difficult to quantify, people who maintain a healthy diet are happier overall land generally enjoy greater concentration and overall happiness. An unhealthy diet rich in fats, sodium and sugar is thought to be a contributing factor in depression, while those who eat well, drink plenty of water and exercise regularly give their minds and bodies the things they need to stay healthier. A balanced diet is by no means a cure for clinical depression, but you will probably notice an improvement in overall well-being when you take care of yourself.

If you want to increase productivity, there are obviously a lot of things that can help. But maintaining a healthy diet is definitely one of them. In many cases, people are unproductive simply because they don't control what they eat or take the extra time in the morning to ensure they have the healthy snacks they need to make it throughout the day. As you do these little things to give you body what it needs, you will be better able to give your business the productivity it demands.
