A conflict in a family owned business is different from a conflict in other types of businesses. In other businesses, a conflict might only affect the business. In a family business, a conflict might affect both the business and the family, as the person responsible for the conflict could very well be one of your family members. So, you should tread carefully and make sure you resolve the conflict amicably.

First, analyze the situation carefully. It is the first step in workplace conflict resolution. Sometimes, a minor conflict will go away on its own. You need not make a big deal out of it. If, on the other hand, you feel that the conflict is something that needs your intervention, you need to pay immediate attention.

If it is between two people or two factions, listen to both sides patiently. Try to find out what they are unhappy about, what they want, and how eager they are to settle things between each other. Once you know all these things, talk to both parties, convince them that they need to put their differences aside for the sake of the business, and try to find a solution that they both agree with.

If, unfortunately, you are not able to resolve the conflict amicably, you should seek the help of a third party. The presence of a third party creates an air of objectivity and makes both parties feel that they can get an impartial, unbiased verdict.

Preventing Conflicts in the Workplace

The first thing you need to do is encourage your employees to come forward with their suggestions, complaints, and opinions. Make sure everyone knows exactly what you expect from them. Conduct workshops and training programs to improve their interpersonal skills, communication skills, and management skills. Most importantly, read books, talk to experts, and visit websites to know more about workplace conflict resolution and make sure you are well prepared to tackle conflicts that might arise every now and then.
