2011's Ultimate Supercars: Ferrari's FF and the Lexus LFA

By: Alan Wade

The Ferrari FF represents a range of firsts for Ferrari, and by the way, FF does not stand for Ferrari Firsts, although, perhaps it ought to. The FF actually refers to Ferrari Four. The vehicle is a 4 seater, which is replacing the outgoing Ferrari 612 Scaglietti. Although Ferrari have produced a number of 4 seaters before now, this is the 1st time that Ferrari has used four wheel drive on a road going car.

Four wheel drive is not the only first for this particular car though. You cannot fail to recognize the style of the FF - because it's majorly different than Ferrari's that have gone before. The look is called 'shooting brake' and could be viewed as a cross between a coupe and an estate. The other way of viewing it is so - it's a hatchback! The interior area it results in permits around 400 litres of luggage, and also, furthermore, the rear seats also collapse down making it possible for this total capacity to be multiplied by two. Are you able to imagine doing all your shopping and then having the capacity to squeeze the whole lot in the rear of your Ferrari!

Even so, it's no Ford Focus. This hatchback boasts a powerful V12 engine which produces a immense 660 bhp as well as 504lb ft of torque. That is good enough to catapult the Ferrari FF from nought to 62mph in 3.7 seconds, credit in part to the 7 speed transmission already in use in the Ferrari 458 Italia in addition to the California. The top speed isn't half bad either - 208 MPH. Moreover, the engine - over 6.2 litres - is in fact the most powerful engine Ferrari have used with a street car, and it's noteworthy that it returns a respectable (for this kind of car) 18MPG.

The bodywork structure is from Ferrari's favourite styling house, Pininfarina, but you probably would not assume so when you take a look at it, such is the departure from old designs. In all honesty I feel it is going to be a love it or hate it design, but one thing is for certain, it will attract attention.

It's somewhat apparent as well that Ferrari is trying to increase the size of their potential audience with this car. The four wheel drive platform for example shows that it will be driveable in more diverse road conditions, including rain and snow. The shooting brake style means that the vehicle is also practical to use day-to-day, so you no longer need to choose between taking your children or the shopping back from the shops.

If this is the blueprint for Ferrari then I can not wait to see what the update for the 599 will look like.

Yes, Lexus and supercar can now be used in the same sentence, due to some confidence exhibited by the Lexus hierarchy, along with the impeccable engineering know-how to not only accomplish it, but to excel with their inaugural effort.

In the past, Lexus has certainly created and presented luxury - there were certainly not any doubts there. But there's a massive distance between a top quality car and a high-class supercar, which becomes apparent the second the Lexus LFA's unique V10 engine starts to sing.

The carbon fibre frame was explicitly engineered not just for aesthetics, but to afford better acoustics from the 4.8-liter V10 engine. As outlined by Lexus, it is tough to manufacture a V10 that'll sound as pleasing as a V8 or V12, and so this particular supercar provides one of a kind air intake areas to stabilize the acoustics.

The official unveiling of the first ever Lexus supercar happened at the Tokyo Motor Show, with the American introduction occurring within 24 hours in Miami, Florida. The press pack at the North American introduction for the LFA were sufficiently fortunate to obtain not only the opportunity to stay at South Beach's grandiose Mondrian Hotel, but to also drive this phenomenal supercar about the Homestead Racing Track. That's the place where the distinction became plain between a luxury sedan and a supercar - which has 552 horsepower punching the 0-60 level in 3.6 seconds. The Lexus LFA tops out at approx . 202 miles per hour, and has $10,000 brakes that are ready for the challenge.

Considering this is a first attempt, Lexus certainly appear contented and confident in their new undertaking, and have delivered a welcome addition to the ever-expanding supercar arena. The LFA is expected to have a price of approximately $375,000 (or £240,000). Lexus will only create five hundred LFA supercars, with initial deliveries planned for later this year.
